Sharing Content With RSS
RSS, which stands for Rich Site Summary, is an XML file format used to
link content from one web site to another, usually in the form of
bulleted lists in the sidebar of the syndicating web site. RSS
doesn't copy the content of the originating site to the new one, it
merely provides an easy way to access headlines and summaries of things
like news stories, event listings, forum postings, etc. These
headlines and summaries then provide a lead-in from the syndicating
site that visitors will see and be enticed with to go to the
specifically syndicated content on the originating web site to read.
So there are two different activities going on in content syndication: publishing, and syndicating. What is published and syndicated is usually called a "news feed", whether the content is news or not. RSS is not the only format for publishing news feeds, but it is certainly the most common, and the one with the most industry attention. Even Sun Microsystems has been talking about the possibilities of RSS within their Java Desktop operating system.
