Photo gallery and other contributed modules - Posted: April 1, 2004 - 6:09 PM Quote and reply
Well, I downloaded and installed Sitellite and I liked it quite a bit, but I can't figure out how to enable a photo gallery. The extra features page on the simian site (http://www.simian.ca/index/extras) implies that a photo gallery is one of the extras. However, the page says, "Because Sitellite is also a powerful PHP Framework and development platform anyone can add additional features themself." Does this mean a photo gallery exists, or just that it is possible and that I have to code it myself?

I can't find a contributed photo gallery module (or any contributed modules at all, for that matter) for Sitellite. Are there any?

The extras list is a list of existing commercial apps built in the sitellite system that exist in some form but are not ready to be made into commercial add-ons just yet because of branding and skinning issues. (they are built, they just need to be made to work as a downloadable add-on).

A free photo gallery add-on or user contributed module does not exist. Many users have talked about making modules but no one has got around to it yet. It seems people are still busy learning the system.

However, do not despair :) The Devfiles module built into Sitellite will serve as a photogallery pretty well. You could try using that functionality and modifying it as necessary.

You could just make a web page with a bunch of thumbnails on it which link to bigger versions of those pictures. (but you probably looking for a more sophisticated solution than that).

Failing all that you can build one in yourself. It is certainly possible. How you would do that of course will require another post. But I just wanted to clarify if one already existed for download or not.

Ok, thanks for the info and quick reply. I'm looking for something a bit more idiot-proof, I suppose ;)

Try DevFiles out. It may do what you are looking for, or close enough to it.

And/Or, try posting this question in the general area. This area is actually for demo questions - you want a feature request or "how do I make this?" general programming question. Someone may be willing to help you out there.

Commercial add-ons.

I'm a skinflint. Will the listed addons ever be made available to people like me, or must I pay for support and such?

1. Official support from us takes our time and as such are always considered billable hours. The only support available for free is the time we (and our community) are willing to donate to this forum, which judging by the number of posts is a considerable ammount :)

2. Maybe. Some of the add-ons are already available for free: SiteSearch, SiteForum, .Org.

Some of them are extremely inexpensive: SiteTracker and SiteMailer are only $249 US.

Some of the ones we will be unveiling soon are ultra powerful commercial applications built on the Sitellite framework, like SiteProject (project management application), SiteTime (time tracking utillity), SiteCalendar (events calendar), SiteShop (ecommerce app), SiteHelper (online marketting tool), etc. These applications are simply way to powerfull and useful to businesses to be given away for free. We have to eat too :)

That being said because they are based on our GPL technology they will be way lower in price than building such an application from scratch.

Keep your eyes peeled for new and exciting add-ons copming from Simian systems very soon!

Oh heck, all I want to see is an easy-to-use blog and a gallery to use and learn the system. If you made these addons freely available, you'd get good, broad, low level exposure for your (seemingly excellent) CMS to hobbyists like myself who also are on the lookout for stuff we can use commercially ;)

From what I've seen from playing for a day, I like your approach. I've been using TYPO3 quite a bit, but I really, really don't like the way they've done the backend/frontend split (they pretty much require content creation through the backend), and the backend is waaaay overly complex for normal users. Lotta training. I like the approach your CMS uses. Much simpler, but seems very powerful. The RTE editor rocks, and I like how simple it si to add images and whatever else you need to articles from the front end.

That's my skinflint argument, at least, to your company to make these high demand, low commercial value addons freely available to people like myself.

Thanks for the quick replies, btw.
